Kybella Q & A

What is Kybella?

Kybella is an injectable medication used to destroy targeted fat cells permanently. This treatment is FDA-approved for use in the area beneath your chin, and improves what’s commonly called a double chin.

The medical term used to describe a double chin is submental fullness. It develops as part of the aging process, but weight gain and genetics are also contributing factors. Everyone stores fat a bit differently, and there’s no way to direct which fat cells are tapped first during weight loss. That’s why some people experience this fullness while others do not.

Kybella is formulated from synthetic deoxycholic acid, a substance your body produces naturally to aid in the digestive process. This substance helps break down dietary fat, essentially emulsifying your food.

How does Kybella reduce unwanted fullness?

Researchers found that injecting small volumes of deoxycholic acid into areas where fat cells are clustered leads to those cells being broken down and destroyed. Kybella works by introducing this fat-busting substance into the tissues beneath your chin.

The process involves administering many shallow injections, but a special numbing cream ensures you remain comfortable from start to finish. Once in place, Kybella damages a portion of targeted fat cells. Those cells release their stored fat and then collapse.

Your body’s lymphatic system processes and eliminates both the fat and the cell debris. This leaves you with fewer fat cells beneath your chin, and a firmer, flatter profile. Most people benefit from more than one round of Kybella injections, but Dr. Mikki can advise you on how many treatments you need during your first visit.

How long will my Kybella results last?

Once Kybella destroys fat cells, those cells are gone forever. They won’t regenerate, which means the treatment is permanent.

However, the remaining fat cells still expand to accommodate more fat if you consistently consume more calories than you burn. Kybella is best suited for people who have reached and are able to maintain a healthy and stable weight. Gaining a significant amount of weight after Kybella treatment will mar your results.
